| Deconstructing the Myths of “The First Thanksgiving” |
 This picture — a reproduction of an early 20th century oil painting by J.L.G. Ferris on display at the library of Congress — is the image most present day Americans have of the first Thanksgiving between the European settlers and Wampanoag Indians at Plimoth Plantation (now Plymouth, MA). One glance and it’s clear to see how thankful Samoset, Squanto and the entire Wampanoag nation must have been to know they would not starve that winter because they now shared their land with kind, benevolent and generous friends like Edward Winslow. It’s such a beautiful painting, it’s almost disappointing to know it isn’t true! |
